If you know a good dressmaker, fantastic! But just because a friend of a friend can knock together a Carnaval costume doesn't meqan they can design and sew a beautiful wedding gown or outfit. It doesn't make them a good seamstress. Be sure you know someone who has used the services of the dressmaker before, and that you both like the result. Don't take their word for it. You must have total confidence in your dressmaker's abilities. Don't simply take a magazine clipping of a dress you like the look of and ask a dressmaker to copy it. How do you know the style will suit you? Know what image you are trying to create and what shapes and fabrics suit you. Be in a position to make an informed decision about the service the dressmaker is offering, the raw materials they are using and the quality of the results.
A good dressmaker may not necessarily be a good designer. Check out out many patterns available in the shops, at department stores and via the internet. You may find something you like and be able to try on garments of similar design in the shops. In all likelihood the dressmaker will not have a selection of shapes and designs for you to try on. You still need to know what suits you, and need to try on different shapes. You may never have worn the type of outfit you want for you wedding day before. Be sure you do know what suits you and are confident about the design, whether it's yours, the dressmaker's or from a pattern. If yours, what questions is the dressmaker asking you? Does he or she have the expertise to tell you if a design is flawed? Ask if there will be a toile? If not is there a pattern? If neither, how do you know what you are getting until you try it on? Are you in a positionto judge the quality of the fabric and the finish of the garment? If not, acquire the knowledge. There are many fine dressmakers out there, but be sure it's a fine one you've chosen.
