There is no legal requirement for a women to change her surname when she marries. But if, like most women, you decide to do so , your marriage certificate is the only documentary evidence you will require to prove your change of name. However, if you want add your husband's name without surrendering your maiden name, you can only do this by deed poll. Legally you are adding your maiden name as a middle name. If you wish to do this for signing on your wedding day you should apply this at least two weeks before.
Even when reatining your maiden name, some institutions insist it is a requirement to advise of the change in your marital status, particularly insurance and mortgage companies. To do this, and to advise of a name chage, you will need to provide your marriage certificate or deed poll (not copies) as prove. You might also want to consider seeking advice about drawing-up wills.
