- Place each person next to at least one other they already know.
- Seat speech makers where they will not have their backs to anyone, if possible.
- Place young children next to, or between their parents.
- Consider a children's table for those aged over seven. Place this in the least favourable position!
- Avoid mixing age groups, unless it is family.
- Ensure a balance between men and women at each table and alternate wherever possible.
- Sit families together and place work colleagues on their own table.
- Look for things guests have in common and for a balance between extroverts and those of a more reserved disposition.
- Do not seat all the single guests together. Work them into the seating plan early to avoid using them to fill places.
- If you know people do not get on, seat them apart from each other.
- Be considerate to the needs of the elderly and any disabled guests.
