Choosing witnesses for your wedding seems like a difficult task, but it is not! You need to take a lot of things into consideration, especially taking care to ensure that nobody feels rejected for having not been chosen.
Among the many preparations when organising your wedding is choosing your witnesses. It is something that both of you must agree upon and often involves phrases like "hmm, I just don't really like him very much" or "I don't fancy him being a witness at my wedding". This is a delicate topic when you consider that many people hope to be chosen, but as the saying goes "the bed's not big enough...".
Here are a few tips on choosing your wedding witnesses; I hope they are of use!
- Choose without pressure, the name will start to come to mind so be sure to write them down in a little notebook where you write down everything regarding the organisation of the wedding. Don't get carried away by reasons such as he's your best friend, or such and such's son is your godson and things like that. You are choosing your witness so you don't need to bestow this honour on someone as a reward for doing "nothing", but because you really want to.
- In both religious and civil ceremonies, you need to have two witnesses, though you can always choose one more if you want to, but don't choose too many because the ceremony will seem eternal when it comes to signing.
- Choose together. The witnesses are for both of you, so the idea of "you choose one and I will choose the other" may result in one of the chosen witnesses not really being liked by one of you. This is your wedding and it should be perfect and to your liking.
- If you choose two members of the same group, such as your gang of friends, it would be well that you give reasons for your choices, as someone is bound to be disappointed. What works wonders here is "Well, we like you all so much that we chose the names by lottery, and so-and-so will be the witness".
