Ceremony Top Tips

  1. Whether holding a religious or a civil ceremony, both, or marrying abroad, ensure the legal criteria have been fulfilled and you have the correct paperwork.

  2. If marrying at ‘approved premises’ confirm the registrar’s availability before securing the booking with the venue and handing over a deposit.

  3. By law, civil marriage ceremonies cannot include any readings or music with religious connotations. However, you are permitted to personalise your ceremony with secular readings and music. Many registrars also allow couples to compose their own wedding vows.

  4. Within a religious marriage ceremony you are confined to what is appropriate. Consult with your officiant who may allow you to add individual and personal elements to the service.

  5. Before finalizing and printing your order of service, send a copy to the officiant to confirm it is correct and that your choice of readings and music is acceptable.

  6. Ensure you liaise with your officiant and the venue organizer or caretaker regarding any photographic or floral restrictions. Check too if candles are allowed and whether guests can throw confetti, rice, flower leaves.

  7. Consider access and parking arrangements for your florist. Check who they should liaise with before and after your wedding for delivery, set-up and clearing.

  8. Organize a rehearsal the evening before the wedding (even if the officiant cannot be present) so everyone involved can familiarize themselves with both the venue and the proceedings.

  9. Brief your best man about his duties before the wedding day and ensure he understands what is expected of both him and the ushers. Make lists of what you’d like them to oversee – they are not just for decoration!

  10. When entering before your assembled congregation on your wedding day, pause before you process up to the aisle. Do not be nervous – this is a room filled with family and friends who are present to offer you their support. Acknowledge this by walking slowly and making eye contact with as many guests as you can. Smile for your groom – you’ve now won over the entire congregation and will have a magical day!
