In the shop

First, allow plenty of time both to look and to try on. Wear white or flesh-coloured underwear and ensure you are wearing a well-fitting bra; it cannot be overstated what a difference this will make. Do not wear haeavy make-up, and if possible don't wear any at all. If you can, shop on a weekday. The consultants than will be able to give you more time; on a Saturday they are busier with back-to-back appointments, and there are often browsers in the shop needing attantion. If there is something specific you want to wear on your wedding, such as a special piece of jewellery, take it with you and let the sales consultant know it.  It could affect or limit your choice of design and fabrics. Arrive with an open mindand be prepared to try-on different styles. Many outfits do not have hanger appeal and you need to see them on you. Most people come in with an idea of what they want, but when they try it on all their preconceived ideas are not really what will suit them. Refer to magazines for ideas, but don't get too boogged-down in detail. The most fundamental thing is to try different shapes. It's no more complicated than buying an ordinary dress, it's just a bigger and whiter one.

Think of starting points. As discussed already, the overal image you have in mind, not specifics, just basic ideas. For example, the silhouette you are looking for, and whether you'd like a romantic, traditional, sexy, simple or demure look. This gives the sales consultant a reference point and saves a lot of time and a good sales consultant or designer will know and say what is a good shape for you.

How do you know if you are in a good shop or boutique with a sales consultant who is good at what they do? You must feel comfortable with them. Ask yourself the question if the convey they know what they are doing and if they are getting to you. Are they asking pertinent question? You would expect them to ask you what type of ceremony you are having, what type of venue the reception will be in, the time of the year, and if there are any special considerations.

A good consultant will be able to assist you with shapes and styles that suit your height and build. You can then start eleminating. Together you can begin to build-upon and modify the look. You may prefer a particular neckline fromseveral that work for you. Some fabrics, textures and shades will suit your hair coulouring and skin tones better than others. If you reject a dress or outfit what is it that you don't like about it? Perhaps the neckline is too high or low. You might want long or short sleeves. You may prefer to keep your flesh covered up. Gut instinct will also help, and shouldn't be ignored. Even if an outfit looks fabulous do you feel comfortable in it? Is it you? We are a big believer that a bride should stay true to the styles she normally loves to wear. No matter how much or little a gown costs you should feel happy and comfortable in it. You should know when you put the dress on that it is right for you.

If you find a gown or outfit you like do not allow yourself to be pressured into making a decision immediately. A reputable shop or boutique will be happy for you to go away and think about it. If they tell you the price is going up tomorrow, shop somewhere else. and if you've plenty of time, don't hand over a deposit and book a dress too far in advance. There are all kinds of reasons why you might later change your mind. The longer the wedding planning process, the more likely it is there will be major changes to the event. Neither do you need to buy the first dress you like for fear or not finding something better. Know what your options are and explore them.

When you think you have made a decision, book an appointment and try on the dress or outfit again. When you have made a firm decision you need to ask some questions. At the top of the list is what is included in the cost? What should you expect to pay for alterations if it is not mada-to-measure or couture? What are the payment terms and what is the deposit? You will want to know the time schedule and how many fittings you need. If you work Monday to Friday, can they see you on a Saturday? And ask if you will see the same consultant or fitter at each stage. Only hand over a deposit when you are comfortable and confident with the decision you have made.
