Search preliminaries

If you are hoping to wear a traditional gown, bear in mind that there is a finite number available. If you go to dozens of shops it is likely you will simply be seeing and trying on the same dresses. Therefore, do some research and select just three or four boutiques and/or department stores who carry a large and varied stock. Do your homework on the internet and see which designers you like. Their websites will state where their gowns are sold.

On your first outing in the quest for your outfit, go with an open mind and plenty of time. Coutiers and designers will see you by appointment only, and thesame usually applies to stores and bridal boutiques if you want to try dresses on (which you do!). Don't shop when you are too tired, because you don't want to be searching fot the perfect look when you are not feeling one-hundred percent. Take it easy the evening before and get a good night's sleep. You'll be sharper and find it easier to remain focused on the task.

Should you take someone with you, and if so, who? If you usually prefer to shop alone do the same now. You can always take someone with you to place an order, or to help you choose when you've narrowed the selection.  If you want to take someone with you choose carefully and limit the number you take, because listening to too many people can be confusing.

You could also consider shopping with a man: Bring a male friend or your dad. Don't bring your mum or best friend unless you really trust them. Mums often have an idea about how they their daughters should look, and how they want them to look. But a man will see things totally differently.. Also make sure that the person you bring along is not a "me person", but someone who can listen and understand what you like. Someone who is not going to tell you to pick something because they would wear it.

A quiet hour by yourself with a really trusworthy and expert sales advisor can be very helpful.
