Hair decisions & detail

When you have chosen your dress show a picture of it to your hair stylist along with a swatch of the fabric. Things to take into account also include your venue, colour schemes and flowers, the theme (if there is one) and the likely conditions on your wedding day, especially if you will be somewhere unusual or doing something different. If you are tying the knot in a hot air balloon, skiing down a mountain or strapped to the front of a biplane, it's likely to be more about what you are doing than how perfect your appearance while doing it. Make sure you have a style that is suitable and appropriate to the day and location.

There are all kinds of things your hairdresser can do for you in addition to crimping, curling or straigthening your hair. They can colour match hair pieces and extensions, either temporary or permanent (the latter beingmuch moreexpensive) and match the exact texture of your hair. They can wire-in accessories that will withstand a gale force wind or simply give you a great blow-dry. Just be who you are and reflect that in your look. You can ask yourself if you have an inner icon that you would like to emulate. This can be a great place to start. Finally we advice to don't look too diferent on your wedding day. Your groom wants to see the women he knows coming down the aisle to marry him!

As well as veils and tiaras, there are jewelled combs, grips and clips available for your hair. Some have feathers or fur, others can be wired with fresh or herbs. If you decide to put fresh flowers on a hairpiece be sure you've accurately conveyed what it is you want to your florist. Put it in writing. And are you suppling the florist with these items? Also check when and where they will be delivered to on the day.

If you opt to wear a veil seek your hairdresser's advice. The style could dictate what you can do with your hair. It's no good having a veil that is pinned to the nape of the neck if you want to pull it over your face for the ceremony. Similarly, if you want to take your veil off for the reception, advise your hairdresser so that it can be taken out without spoiling your hair. And bring your veil or hairpieces to the trail run. A trail run is advisable and it's a good idea not to schedule it too far in advance of the wedding. The length and condition of the hair won't then change too much. Ten days before is ideal.

The trial is the time to make firm decisions. If you are not happy with any aspect at the trial, say so. Don't leave it until your wedding day and worry in the meantime. Also note how long it takes and ensure you have the appropriate amount of time scheduled for the wedding day appointment and with enough time left to get dressed.
