Top hair tips

  •  Find a good hairdresser or ensure yours does wedding hair.
  • If you need to find a hairdresser get recommendations from friends whose hair you like, or contact an official professional hairdressing association for advice.
  • Regularly trim your hair (about every six weeks) to keep it in good condition and prevent split ends. Use salon quality hair products.

    • Establish a good rapport with your hairdresser and share your wedding hair ideas with them. Create a 'mood board' of ideas with pictures from magazines of hair (and make-up) styles you like.
    • Secure the wedding day booking and book a trial run. Check what is included in the price and that you get the trial within a couple of weeks of the wedding.
    • At the trial run, wear clothes similar in colour to your wedding outfit. Take jewellery and hairpieces with you. If you don't like your hair and make-up at the rehearsal, say so and do not leave until you are happy.

    • If you are booking a hairdresser (or make-up artist) to come to you on your wedding day, does the price include travel costs and expenses? What will they charge for extra heads?
    • If asking a hairdresser and make-up professionals to come to you, will you have a suitable room available on on the day? It must be well-lit, with a comfortable chair and accessible power points.
    • Don't purchase hair accessories until you have chosen your outfitand consulted your hairdresser. Be open minded about how professionals can help you, they can do things you can't.
    • If you will wear a veil, ask your hairdresser to teach someone else how to remove it in case you want to take it off during the reception.

    • When ordering a hairpiece with fresh flowers in it, get in writing what you have ordered. Know when and where it is being delivered to on the day.
    • Do not experiment with hair colour within six weeks of your wedding.
    • Never attempt to rectify hair disasters yourself. Find a good salon and ask for a senior stylist or colourist.
