- Know the difference between the services available (couture, made-to-measure, ready-to-wear).
- Browse though bridal magazines and keep clippings of dresses and outfits you like. Also look at designers' websites.
- 'White wedding or not?' This is a good starting point!
- Who are your style icons?
- Seek the advice of your groom. Show him magazines and ask what he does and doesn't like.
- Think of what will be appropriate to your occasion and the time of year.
- Research a few stores and salons and see who stocks designers you like.
- Make appointments at three of four outlets - don't assume they'll fit you in if you turn up.
- If you can, shop on a weekday - you'll be given more time and it will be quieter.
- Only take someone with you whose judgement you trust, or go alone.
- Purchase a good bra.
- Keep an open mind. Try on shape after shape, eliminate and know why you have done so.
- Remember some outfits have little or no 'hanger appeal' - you have to try them on.
- Be comfortable with the sales assistant or designer and don't allow yourself to be bullied or pressured into making decisions.
- Don't purchase anything for the trimmer, thinner bride you hope to be - unless it is realistic.
- Don't limit yourself by trying to find an outfit you coul later alter to wear again. If that's a requirement then widen the search from bridal wear.
- After the wedding, professionally clean your outfit and store it in acid free tissue.
