What's the Best Time of Day to Get Married?

The time of day that you choose to perform your ceremony can have a big effect on the final outcome of your big day. Let's have a look at some important considerations...

The moment you are engaged, your long task of selecting the date, time and place of your wedding begins. The truth is that these three factors are all interlinked, so lets take a look at them.

  • In warm climates such as Spain there is no doubt that during the spring and summer you must choose late in the day, or even evening, for your ceremony so as to avoid the heat.
  • In the autumn and winter morning will be the universal choice for weddings, this way you take advantage of that bright early morning sunlight, and the little heat that there is.
  • It's not the same celebrating in the open air as it is inside a church, so the location of your ceremony is also an important factor to keep in mind when deciding on when to have your wedding.
  • If the wedding is on the beach, sunset may be an unmissable romantic moment to make your vows.
  • In the countryside, you might have to make sure there is tree shelter from sun or rain if you do it in the middle of the day.
  • In a church or monastery you may have less flexibility in choosing a time that suits you, but the advantage is that if it is covered you won't be exposed to the elements and will have more leeway.

The type of wedding reception is also decisive in choosing the perfect time:
  • For a classic wedding banquet, either lunchtime or dinnertime will do.
  • Picnics are better at lunchtime.
  • The advantage of an evening reception is that everyone can have a drink.
  • Buffets are very flexible as they can serve breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack-style dining.
